A participatory project between art, connection and solidarity
How to make an invisible link visible? How to turn a poetic idea into a participatory experience and a concrete impact? The challenge was to create an accessible, engaging project that could speak to everyone and at the same time raise real funds for a delicate cause: children's health. All this, in different contexts - an urban café and a large publishing fair - while maintaining consistency of message, aesthetic quality and emotional depth.
We designed a phygital activation combining photography, storytelling, live interaction and social engagement. With The Red Thread of Destiny, we built an inclusive and modular narrative system: a physical red thread running through the hands, faces and stories of those who chose to participate. A symbol that became a real connection, solidarity action and shareable content, capable of generating value for all those involved.
It is connection. It is encounter.
From this question comes The red thread of destiny, a photographic and participatory project conceived by io Smpl. - the initiative of Simpol. the reactive agency dedicated to sustainable and social impact projects - with the aim of transforming an abstract concept into a shared, visible, concrete experience. A creative gesture that has been transformed into an act of real solidarity, in support of the FORMA Foundation of the Regina Margherita Children's Hospital in Turin.
The inspiration stems from the well-known oriental legend of the red thread of destiny, according to which each person is bound from birth by an invisible red thread to their kindred soul.
In our project, that thread has become real: a physical red thread, held in the hands of each participant, running through each black and white shot, creating a symbolic and visible link between all the people involved.
We asked each person not only to allow themselves to be portrayed, but also to answer a simple but powerful question: ‘What do you find on the other side of the red thread? ’From their faces and voices came a large collective wall and some social pills: a choral narrative of love, empathy and human connection.
📍 Graphic Days® 2025 - Costadoro Social Coffee in Turin
The first activation took place on 9 May at the Costadoro Social Coffee in Turin, as part of the official programme of Graphic Days®, the international festival dedicated to visual design. In this context, the project took shape as an immersive experience, transforming the space into a place for reflection and meeting, thanks to the availability and support of Costadoro, partner of the event, and the technical and photographic support of Riflessi shop.
📍 Turin International Book Fair - Lingotto Fiere
From 15 to 19 May, The Red Thread of Destiny reached the public at the International Book Fair, inside the Lingotto Fiere spaces, thanks to the precious collaboration with GL events Italia, partner and promoter of the initiative. Sincere thanks also to Riflessi Shop and Fast Events, technical partners of this second edition of the project. The installation grew day after day, involving hundreds of people and building, literally, a visible network made of faces, stories and interwoven threads. At both stages, participants were able to take home their own printed portrait and, above all, contribute with a donation to the FORMA Foundation.
At the heart of the project was the support of the FORMA Foundation, active alongside children hospitalised at the Regina Margherita Children's Hospital in Turin, one of the main paediatric centres nationwide. Each person portrayed was invited to contribute with a donation. Thanks to the participation of over 1.000 people, it was possible to raise more than 5.000 euros: a concrete result, which will be allocated to the purchase of advanced MRI software, essential to help neurosurgeons plan complex operations even more safely and accurately.
"This project was born out of a desire to tell the story of love as a connecting force. To have transformed a symbolic gesture into real help for so many children is a source of great pride for us. It is proof that creativity, participation and solidarity can generate an authentic impact."- Simone Arena, Founder & Creative Director of Simpol. the reactive agency
The Red Thread of Destiny was much more than an art installation. It is the demonstration that creativity can be at the service of important causes, that an idea can become a concrete gesture, that a simple thread can bind hundreds of people around a common goal: to help those most in need.
It is connection. It is encounter.
